Choose three of the following and write two double-spaced pages (ca. 500 words) on each topic

1. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has said that the United States is the "greatest moral force in world history" and "the one indispensable nation." Comment.


2. Economic globalization has created the necessary but not the sufficient conditions for a global system of governance. Comment.

3. In spite of ever-greater material production, ever-greater wealth, ever-greater science and industry, two-thirds of the world's people are sunk in terrible poverty. Comment.

4. Five member states of the United Nations enjoy "permanent" membership in the Security Council and the right to cast a veto in the voting for Council resolutions. Mention at least one common argument why this is a necessary evil and then refute this argument on a basis of attainable democratization of the UN.

5. Secretary General Kofi Annan believes that better coordination between the United Nations and the Bretton Woods Institutions will result in better and more "coherent" global policy making. Comment, being sure to mention the conflict between neo-liberal theory and Keynesianism.
