Global Day of Action against the G8, Solidarity Shown with St Petersburg Worldwide (July 15, 2006)
Authorities went to extraordinary lengths to restrain dissidents at the 2006 G8 Summit in St Petersburg, reportedly arresting some on minor charges unrelated to the meeting. In response to the arrests, crowds across Europe held demonstrations protesting the harsh, repressive treatment of anti-G8 activists in the lead up to the Summit. (Gipfelsoli Infogruppe)

Attempts to Stifle Dissent before Summit (July 13, 2006)
Russian authorities have reportedly tried to suppress any kind of protest at the July 2006 G8 Summit in St Petersburg. Participants in a parallel conference in Moscow, "The Other Russia," claim that the police threatened to arrest them on "administrative charges" and removed others from Moscow-bound trains and planes. The allegations raise concerns among human rights groups that the high-profile meeting will take place "against a starkly undemocratic backdrop." (Human Rights Watch)
