New Members Elected to UN Security Council (October 10, 2005)
The General Assembly elected the five coveted two-year seats on the Security Council. Congo, Qatar, Slovakia and Ghana won easy election, and Peru defeated Nicaragua in the only contested race. The new members join Argentina, Denmark, Greece, Japan and Tanzania, who were elected last year and will remain on the Council until the end of 2006. (Associated Press)

Who will replace Algeria, Benin, Brazil, Philippines and Romania as non-permanent members of the Security Council for the 2006-2007 term? While both Nicaragua and Peru are seeking to succeed Brazil in a seat earmarked for Latin America, Ghana, Congo Republic, Slovakia and Qatar will likely win the seats set aside for Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia.
