Save the UN from Collapse!

Protest the Growing Financial Crisis

as part of a

Worldwide Candlelight Vigil

on

Wednesday, October 23, 1996
6:00 to 7:00 PM
Ralph Bunche Park

1st Avenue between 42 and 43 streets

  • A deep financial crisis is crippling the United Nations and pushing it to the brink of bankruptcy. In dozens of cities worldwide, people are holding protest vigils on October 23, the eve of UN day.

  • Though many countries owe dues to the UN, the United States owes more than all the rest combined: a total of $1.6 billion.

  • The UN works on human rights, the environment, education, women, disarmament, peace and more – programs that are already deeply harmed and could disappear.

  • Individual national governments cannot solve the world’s great problems like pollution and economic instability. We need the UN, so we can build a common future for humanity.

  • Our vigil calls on the United States – and all others – to pay up! We affirm our support for a strong and democratic UN, responsive to the needs of citizens worldwide!
