Dominican Republic Vigil Letter

Santo Domingo
24 October 1996

Ms. Donna Brinak
Ambassador of the United States

The Federalists of the Dominican Republic are very concerned about the financial crisis that overshadows the United Nations.

The U.N. is seriously weakened and faces possible collapse because member nations have not paid their dues. In the month of September more than 100 of the 195 member counries owed the U.N. a total of US$1.2 billion.

Some countries have not been able to pay their dues because of deep economic problems. But some of the world's richest countries have also defaulted on their promises.

As citizens concerned about the social stability of the globe, we must not permit the bankruptcy of the one international forum where the peoples and nations of the world are able to meet and discuss their points of view and criticisms, on such subjects as: development, human rights, social security, the environment, disarmament, peace, and other issues. We call upon member nations of the U.N. to meet their assessments responsibly and on time and we appeal for the strengthening and democratizing of the U.N.

Sincerely,

Lic. German A. Diaz
President, Federalist Foundation
