UNMIK Chief Warns Cut in Kosovo Aid
to Have "Catastrophic Consequences”

BBC
April 25, 2002

A considerable reduction in aid flowing to Kosovo promises to have "tragic consequences", UN Kosovo mission chief UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo - UNMIK Michael Steiner told the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday 25 April .

The drop in aid is coming at a critical time when thousands of refugees are to return to the province, Steiner said. Since the participation of Serbs in the Kosovo government is achieved, the return of Kosovo Serbs to 14 towns and of members of other ethnic groups in another seven villages is planned to be carried out within three months, Steiner said.

The return of refugees will only be possible if aid keeps flowing, Steiner said, and pointed specifically to Kosovo's difficult economic situation.

"An unemployment rate of 50 per cent is an intolerable situation," Steiner said, and added that privatization would achieve secure jobs for Kosovo inhabitants in the long run but that there was no immediate solution to the province's economic problems.
