Take Action on International Justice

Civil society has long driven the establishment of international norms protecting basic human rights along with the tools to enforce them. While governments play a key role, it is individuals who goad them to act in the name of international justice. As international law increasingly recognizes the rights of the individual, and states and their agents find it more and more difficult to hide abuses behind the mantle of national sovereignty, citizen involvement is more crucial than ever. This page explains how to make a difference in the fight against impunity.

Current Issues

International Criminal Court
The International Criminal Court (ICC) promises to end the impunity long enjoyed by war criminals and those guilty of crimes against humanity. But not all nations have backed the Court and some, most notably the US, actively campaign against it. Let the world's governments know you support accountability for perpetrators of the most heinous crimes.

    Alien Tort Claims Act
The Alien Tort Claims Act (ATCA) allows victims to sue human rights abusers in US courts, even if the infraction occurred outside the US. While the 200-year-old law has proven a valuable tool in the fight for accountability, the Bush Administration has vigorously opposed it. In recent cases the US government has argued for a narrow interpretation of the ATCA that would allow even the worst rights abusers to go free. Voice your support for the ATCA and the human rights values it protects.
