The UN Millennium Summit in New York next month will focus on problems affecting Africa, particularly HIV/AIDS, UN Development Program spokesperson Djibril Diallo said yesterday in Dakar, Senegal. World leaders will assess problems facing Africa and chart a course of action to help the continent, he said.

Diallo said African leaders need to make a commitment to break the silence on HIV/AIDS because its impact on human development poses a major challenge for the continent. "The development challenges facing today's world would not be easily solved if the problems facing Africa [are] not tackled," Diallo said.

Diallo said the summit is important for African leaders because they have complained that the continent has been overlooked in the past. "For Africa, this will be an opportunity to ensure that we make the most of the coming millennium," he added.
