Letter to New York Times on Rejection
of Human Rights in China

By Joanna Weschler, Human Rights Watch
representative to the United Nations

New York Times
June 11, 1999

To the Editor:

The denial of special United Nations status to Human Rights in China, an organization that has been helping victims' families bring criminal charges against Chinese leaders responsible for the 1989 killings in Tiananmen Square, is unfortunately far from exceptional (news article, June 7). Many human rights organizations applying for this status, which allows them to present information to the United Nations, have spent years fighting initial rejections.

The United Nations panel that awards accreditations is dominated by governments with questionable human rights records. Indeed, the list of governments that blocked Human Rights in China's application is a veritable "who's who" of violators, including Algeria, China and Sudan.
