ECOSOC and the Suspension Case
of the Transnational Radical Party

The Transnational Radical Party (TRP) may have its consultative status with ECOSOC supsended. The Russian government complained about this NGO because it had allowed a Chechen representative to talk at the annual session of the Commission on Human Rights held in Geneva in April 2000. The ECOSOC Committee on NGOs first met to consider the issue on June 21, 2000 and after lengthy debates, asked the TRP to submit a comprehensive response on September 16. On September 27, the Committee decided not to reconsider the case and recommended that TRP be suspended for three years. The recommendation was forwarded to ECOSOC for its final decision to be made on October 18, 2000.
