Secretary General Kofi Annan
Honored For Peace Work

Secretary General Kofi Annan recently received the 2000 Path to Peace Award. The annual award, bestowed by the Path to Peace Foundation, recognizes an individual's outstanding leadership in the international community.

The Path to Peace Foundation, established in 1991, is a nonprofit foundation providing support for the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. The Foundation's president and founder, His Excellency Archbishop Renato R. Martino, also holds the position of Apsotolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holly See to the United Nations.

In accepting the award, Annan said that he was "moved several times over to receive this award because the Path to Peace Foundation works to bring the world the teachings of His Holiness Pope John Paul II--teachings that resound with people in all countries as the fundamental tenets of peace."

Annan went on to thank the Pope and reflect upon his teachings. "He has reminded us of our obligations under humanitarian law; of our duty to provide humanitarian aid to suffering civilians and refugees. He has reminded us that lasting peace means more than the absence of war, and depends on two indivisible and interdependent rights, the right to peace and the right to development."

Annan is the eighth recipient of the Path to Peace Award. His predecessor, Boutros Ghali was the first to receive the award in 1993. Other recipients have included: His Majesty King Baudouin I of Belgium (1994, posthumously); Her Excellency Mrs. Corazon Aquino, former President of the Philippines (1995); His Excellency Mr. Lech Walesa, former President of Poland (1996); Her Excellency Mrs. Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, former President of Nicaragua (1997); His Excellency Dr. Rafael Caldera, President of Venezuela (1998); and His Excellency Dr. Carlos Saul Menem, President of Argentina (1999).
