Human rights groups, governments and UN officials criticize UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for his close relationship with Washington and for supporting pro-US decisions. For example, Ban opposed a US withdrawal from Iraq and committed to an increased UN presence in the country. The Secretary General defends his decisions, calling them pragmatic and claims he prefers to work behind the scenes, rather than being a public moral figure. UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon requested that the US, Britain, France and Germany postpone toughening sanctions on Iran. Ban plans on using “dialogue” to coax Iran to stop its uranium enrichment program. The Secretary General explains that he employed similar tactics to negotiate the hybrid peacekeeping force for Sudan. And as with the case of Sudan, the US, UK and France disagree with China and Russia over increasing sanctions against Iran. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon urges continued international support of Liberia's rebuilding process which faces considerable delay due to monetary difficulties amongst other things, and recommends the extension of the UN Mission in Liberia UNMIL until March 31, 2008. In addition, Ban hopes for further co-operation between UNMIL, the UN Mission in Cote d'Ivoire (UNOCI) and the Sierra Leonean and Guinean armed forces to patrol border areas. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is hopeful about the role of the recently formed Palestinian Unity Government.in the peace process between Israel and Palestine. The “Diplomatic Quartet” (UN, United States, Russian Federation and European Union) had frozen contacts and withheld monetary contributions to the Hamas Government pending a commitment to “renounce violence, recognize Israel and accept agreements already signed between Israel and the Palestinians.” Ban says that the sanctions may be lifted following further steps in the peace process. Amidst continued low-level violence in Timor Leste, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon hopes to extend the UN Integrated Mission in Timor Leste (UNMIT) for 12 months to show the Security Council’s continued commitment to the region. Further, Ban stresses that Timorese authorities need an increased role in maintaining security and he also calls for more humanitarian assistance from international donors. (UN News)
