Pakistan has called on the UN Security Council to work to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with its resolutions and the promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Addressing the UN Security Council during its open debate on Timor Leste Monday, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations, Ambassador Munir Akram emphasized that the realization of the aspirations of the people of Timor Leste should remind the Council of its other promises which had not been realized and to appeal to it to show consistency and not selectivity in its decisions.

"Pakistan is proud to have been one of the largest troop contributors to UNTAET which oversaw the transition of East Timor into an independent Timor Leste," he said adding we are pleased to be still present in Timor Leste as part of UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNMISET). Our commitment to the peace, stability and independence of Timor Leste remains undiminished." He said that we are also proud of Pakistan's role, over the years, as a leading advocate of the right of peoples to self-determination. Pakistan has helped to keep the "flame of freedom and self-determination alive specially within the UN" over the last fifty years.

"Let us take this opportunity to remind the Council of its other promises which have not been realized and to appeal to it to show consistency, not selectivity in its decision, and to work to resolve the Kashmir issue in accordance with its own resolutions and the promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir." "Timor has been a triumph for self-determination. It is rightfully referred to as one of the "success stories" of the United Nations. It is for that we share the concern which has been expressed around this table over recent events," the ambassador said.
