US Military Aid to Israel Is "Painful Blow" to Peace Process - Security Council - Global Policy Forum

US Military Aid to Israel Is
"Painful Blow" to Peace Process

BBC
November 24, 2002

The US administration promised to offer Israel 2.16bn dollars in military aid. This is more than the 2.1bn dollars that it originally asked Congress to allocate. The administration said the increase is warranted because of the dangers that the Zionist entity is facing and because of the efforts it made to achieve peace!

We believe that everyone, except US officials, knows that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's current government is completely hostile to peace and that it does not believe in or work for peace. Everyone knows that since this government came to power it has been launching a fierce war against the Palestinians, committing the worst atrocities, and nurturing an atmosphere of hatred and racism. This government cancelled all the agreements that were singed with the Palestinians, including the agreements that were signed in the White House. It escalated tension on all the fronts of the conflict.

It did not implement any of the UN Security Council resolutions, including the latest resolution, which called for the withdrawal of the Israeli troops from the Palestinian territories and the lifting of the siege on the PNA Palestinian National Authority . We have not heard any word of protest from Washington against this criminal behaviour. Rather, Washington is sending its fleets and troops to the region under the pretext that the Iraqi government might not respect UN Security Council Resolution 1441 concerning international inspections.

Since General Shaul Mufaz became minister of war, we have been witnessing a dangerous escalation of the hostile acts against the Palestinians. Not a day passes without the troops of the enemy invading the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and committing a series of brutal operations against the civilians and their economic establishments. They flagrantly violate human rights and international law. Despite all this, the US administration praises the Israeli practices and views Sharon's crimes as acts of self-defence.

The US administration matched its words with deeds and increased its military aid to the Zionist entity under weak pretexts. By doing that, the US administration is dealing a painful blow to the peace process, dashes hopes, and encourages the aggressors to continue their aggression and violate agreements and international resolutions, and pushes the region towards the most dangerous state of tension. The US administration does all that without paying any attention to the need of the region and the world for peace, security and economic development, and without paying any attention to the Palestinian people's need for freedom, dignity and self-determination.

The truth is that the rumbling of the Israeli tanks in the occupied Arab territories is accompanied by the drums of war that are being beaten by Washington in preparation for attacking Iraq, destroying its establishments, and shaking the stability and security of the entire Middle East.

Observers agree that the US-Israeli alliance, in its current form, constitutes the biggest threat to international security, peace and law. Many countries expressed great resentment at the plans of this alliance to displace the Palestinians, attack the Iraqi people, and control the sources of oil to strengthen US hegemony on Europe in particular.

There is no explanation for the increase in US military aid to the Zionist entity other than the fact that Washington is closely involved in the aggressive plans. Based on this, the Arabs are required to revise their policies and positions. They should strengthen their pan-Arab solidarity, face foreign dangers with a unified active position, and take measures on the ground to make the rulers of Washington realize that they cannot continue to loot the wealth of the region and at the same time cover up Israel's crime.
