Missions by Security Council Members - Global Policy Forum Missions by
Security Council MembersSince 1999, the UN Security Council has resumed and increased the number of missions by its members into conflict areas, undertaking seven such missions - mainly to Africa - during 2000-2001. Council members, and other observers, agree that these missions are useful in obtaining a ground's eye view of the situation, enabling the Council to better assess required action and to see the work of NGOs and the UN in the field. These missions also bring hope to the affected people and credibility to the Council's work. Increasing detail in Security Council mandates as well as greater attention to women and children in conflict and post conflict building show the results and benefits of a more engaged Security Council.
