  • Foreign Debt of Developing and Former Eastern Bloc Nations 1970-2001
This page contains statistics on poor countries’ external debt. The total debt has slightly decreased in recent years, mainly because private banks have been less inclined to lend money to middle-income poor countries after the financial crises in Brazil, Thailand and elsewhere in the late 1990s. However, the reduction does not represent a real improvement for the most troubled economies of the world. Many HIV/AIDS-stricken Sub-Saharan countries still spend more money on debt repayments than on healthcare.
