Economic Growth: 1980-2001
This page contains statistics on economic growth, measured as the percent increase in real gross domestic product (GDP). Real GDP includes all currently produced goods and services sold on the market, but hides regional variations in income and spending and ignores factors like the value of services in households and through volunteerism. Despite its weaknesses as a measure of development and human well-being, the GDP remains the most common indicator of economic output.Population Below the Poverty Line (July 28, 2005)
This table lists the fifteen countries with the highest population percentages below the poverty line.Population Living on Less Than $1 a Day, by Region: 1981-2001
This page includes data on extreme poverty, measured as percentage of population living on less than $1 per day. Anti-poverty advocates have frequently criticized this World Bank benchmark as arbitrary or too low. Critics further argue that the bank’s method of calculating purchasing power parities systematically underestimates the number of poor. However, even according to official World Bank figures more than a fifth of the world’s population and almost half of all people in Sub-Saharan Africa live in extreme poverty.Population Living Below $1 and $2 a Day, by Region: 1990 - 2015 (Projected)
The World Bank breaks down the population living below $1 and $2 a day into graphs for six regions of the world.Urban vs. Rural Access to Basic Services in Developing Countries
