Brief Report on March & April 1999 Meetings of
Ad Hoc Working Group on Financing for DevelopmentBy Harris Gleckman
DPAD/DESA Programme OfficerThe Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group on Financing for Development held its first set of informal discussions on the "form, scope and agenda" for the high level event on financing for development to held in 2001. The focus of attention during these informal discussions was on the first four "key elements" : mobilizing domestic resources for development (16 March); mobilizing international private financial flows for development (17 March); international financial cooperation for development (18 March); and external debt (bilateral, multilateral and commercial) (19 March). The day preceding the informal intergovernmental consultations, there was an NGO/Business panel on the same 4 themes and an NGO consultation with the vice-chairpersons.
The informals will continue with the second set of four topics in early April with consideration of: trade and financing for development (5 April); innovative sources of financing (6 April); governance of the international monetary, financial and trade systems (7 April); and interrelationships between major elements and other special topics (8 April).
A revised site includes all statements provided by delegations during the informals, the statements by the Second Committee panelists that preceded the informals, a summary of views presented at an NGO consultation on 15 March as well as a new homepage for each of the eight "key elements". The eight "key element" homepage provides a way for interested parties to exchange ideas and proposals.
