Financing for Development:
Status Report as of 28 April

By Harris Gleckman
DPAD/DESA Programme Officer

The General Assembly has established an Ad Hoc Open Ended Working Group on Financing for Development to make recommendations on the "form, scope and agenda" for a high level event on financing for development in 2001.

In preparation for the next meeting of the Working Group on Finance for Development (3-5 May), an overview of the in-depth discussions during the informal meetings last month on the key elements of the Index Report has been prepared. The Vice-Chairpersons have also prepared a consolidated paper to assist in further consideration of the scope of the planned event.

These two papers and the accompaning letter from the Vice-Chairpersons to the Permanent Representatives to the UN in NY are now available on the UN Financing for Development web site.

In their letter, Vice-Chairpersons have invited the Working Group to engage in the first discussion on the issues of the format of the event on finance for development to further global partnership for development. The Vice-Chairpersons felt it might now be appropriate for delegations to address:

  • Participation of other relevant international organizations
  • Participation of other stakeholders
  • Level of participation
  • Duration of event
  • Best method to ensure appropriate international focus and visibility for the event
  • Nature of event
  • Venue

The revised site includes all statements provided by delegations during the informals, the statements by the Second Committee panelists that preceded the informals as well as a homepage for each of the eight "key elements". Each "key element" homepage also provides a way for interested parties to exchange ideas and proposals.

On the morning of 30 April the Vice-Chairpersons have again invited accredited non-governmental organizations to meet with them and other delegations in Conference Room 5.
