Security Council

D'Escoto: "The UN Has Failed" (October 2009)

In this video interview, Miguel d'Escoto speaks out on the obstacles he has encountered during his term as General Assembly President. D'Escoto held the democratization of the UN as a key pillar of his Presidency, but ran up against the limits of the General Assembly's power. According to d'Escoto, the UN is failing to effectively address the two objectives for which it was created - the prevention of war and the eradication of poverty - because of the most powerful states' disproportionate influence over the organization. (The Real News Network)

Miguel d'Escoto on Palestine and the UN (October 2009)

"The question of Palestine remains the most serious political and human rights problem on the agenda of the United Nations since its creation," says outgoing General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto. He points to the UN's failure to lift the Israeli and Egyptian blockade on Gaza as an example of the organization's decadence. Even though all of the organs of the UN - including the Security Council - have called for the blockade to be lifted, the most powerful members have done nothing to force compliance. According to d'Escoto, they are quite comfortable with this. (The Real News Network)

Afghanistan at a Crossroads

A probing slideshow documenting the reality of the so called "war on terror."  Photographs and captions from a range of reporters and followers question the legitimacy and effectiveness of foreign military troops in Afghanistan, and strongly endorse re -evaluation and the withdrawal of military troops.

Rethink Afghanistan (October 2009)

Rethink Afghanistan is a ground-breaking, full-length documentary focusing on the key issues surrounding the Afghan war. It questions the way the US administration has framed the war and calls for an immediate end to military operations in the region. This documentary invites viewers to "rethink" their preconceived ideas by answering important questions on the motives, cost and impact of American involvement in Afghanistan: Has the war made the US safer? What do the Taliban want? Has the situation of Afghan women improved since the Taliban were overthrown? Can the war be "won?"

International Justice

Cambodia's Trials Revisited (September 2009)

This episode of Al Jazeera's "People & Power" programme critically assesses the work of the UN-backed tribunal created to try former members of the Khmer Rouge. It points to the tribunal's failure to reach out to Cambodian people, which is partly due to its secretive methods of work and partly to the disconnection between the city and the countryside - more than 90% of the Cambodian population live in rural zones with little to no access to television or radio. Accusations of corruption and politically motivated decisions are also affecting the tribunal's credibility. (Al Jazeera)

Dark Side of Natural Resources

Israel Rations Palestinians to Trickle of Water (October 27, 2009)

Amnesty International is denouncing Israel's discriminatory water policies in the Occupied Territories and their disastrous impact on the Palestinian economy. As the occupying power, Israel controls the underground water supplies for the West Bank, which it has disproportionately redirected towards Israel settlements and farms. The average water consumption per Palestinian is only a quarter of consumption per settler and way below the daily intake recommended by the WHO. Meanwhile, Palestinians under the Israeli blockade in Gaza are left with polluted water and no alternatives. (Amnesty International)

Crude (September 2009)

Joe Berlinger's "Crude" provides a disturbing insight into the important environmental lawsuit on Chevron's oil contamination of the Amazon jungle in Ecuador. The movie raises concerns about the profit of multinational corporations and companies' serious human rigths violations.
