Global Policy Forum - Millennium Mobilization

Millennium Mobilization

On October 23, 1999, the eve of United Nations Day, citizens around the world took action to demand full funding for the United Nations. National governments have failed to provide adequate funding for the UN and the United States alone owes more than a billion dollars in dues. Citizens must press their governments to address and solve this crisis, which is ruining the UN and seriously weakening nearly all the organizations of the UN system. For the past three years, GPF has held a worldwide candlelight vigil, which took place in 42 cities in 1998. This fourth year was organized as the "Millennium Mobilization" -- part of NGO activities to build a stronger UN for the next millenium. The day of action included vigils, but also many other kinds of events. Participant groups held public meetings, delivered messages to public officials, released symbolic balloons or doves, wrote letters to the editor, held fasts, offered prayers, held debates and teach-ins, and other activities best suited to local conditions and concerns.
