Millenium Mobilization,

Millennium Mobilization Letter

August 10, 1999
Dear Friend,

I am writing to invite you to organize an event on October 23rd, as part of the fourth annual worldwide action in support of full funding of the UN. As I'm sure you know, the UN's financial crisis remains very serious. In addition, a number of other states including Germany, Denmark and Japan, have recently cut their contributions to the UN Development Program. Even UN emergency humanitarian assistance to war-torn Angola has met only a small fraction of its goals in national pledges.

So we must redouble our effort and bring many more people into the movement to support the UN.

This year, rather than a vigil, we are promoting a day of activities of all kinds. Some will continue to hold candlelight vigils, such as those held in forty-two cities worldwide in 1998. Others will hold public meetings, deliver messages to public officials, release symbolic balloons or doves, write letters to the editor, hold fasts, offer prayers, hold debates and teach-ins, or other activities best suited to local conditions and concerns.

This year's events are sponsored by the Millennium Mobilization, part of the Millennium Forum being organized by the NGO Community to consider the great issues facing the United Nations and the world in the millennium year. I am hopeful that this sponsorship will broaden our capacity of outreach worldwide.

I hope that you and your colleagues will want to join in this effort this year. Below is the statement of the Millennium Mobilization.

Please let us know of your plans.

Best wishes,

Jim Paul
