A new joint Oxfam-American Jewish World Service report finds that in 2010 over 17 million people could have been reached by US-funded food aid had the aid been sourced and delivered differently. Unlike many other donors, the US has restrictions on food aid and requires that aid must be bought from US companies and that at least 75 percent of the aid must be shipped on US-flagged vessels. The report urges Congress to curb these unfair and inefficient schemes, which undercut developing country farmers by flooding markets with US commodities and take up to an additional 14 weeks to reach their destination.
