Lockdown on Sea Island (June 8, 2004)

Anticipating protest at the 2004 Sea Island G8 Summit, the State Governor granted extra powers to local law enforcement. Authorities prepared body bags and a refrigerated truck to take away corpses and converted a playing-field into a detention center. Taking a more welcoming approach, local Presbyterians offer a "fun program" of games such as "Who Wants to Be An Activist?" (Independent)

Infamous 'Miami Model' of Protest Clampdown, Coming to a Town Near You (June 8, 2004)

Organizers planning protests at the Sea Island G8 Summit say that law enforcement officials are employing tactics similar to those used at the 2003 FTAA protests in Miami. The "Miami Model" includes pre-emptive arrests and a massive "security" presence, such as in Brunswick, a coastal town near Sea Island, where the population of 15,000 residents is exceeded by over 20,000 police. G8 Protests Make Little Impact at Summit Start (June 8, 2004)

At the 2004 G8 Summit, thousands of National Guardsmen, police, secret service agents and other law enforcement officers outnumbered a few hundred protesters. Arguing that the security presence deterred many from attending, activists dismissed claims that the anti-globalization movement ran "out of steam." (Reuters)
