Text of report by Algerian radio on 9 October

Algeria expressed today in New York its conviction that the only way for a just and final settlement of the Western Saharan issue, despite the obstacles facing the peace process, was the implementation of the peace plan.

Algeria's permanent representative at the UN, Abdallah Baali, called on the international community in this respect not lose strength in its commitment to justice and legality. He called on the decolonization committee to reaffirm the validity and soundness of the settlement plan and to implement the plan in whole until the self-determination referendum was organized.

During his intervention, Mr Baali praised the stance of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, which stressed the need to continue the implementation of the settlement plan. He called on Morocco and the Polisario Front to work for removing the obstacles impeding the settlement process, and criticized the UN Secretariat which worked towards showing that the settlement plan was inapplicable to the extent of justifying its abandonment.
