The UN Financing for Development Forum meets in New York from 20–25 April - the first session since last year’s Fourth Financing for Development Conference (FfD4) conference in Sevilla.
The Forum will be held in a new format. It opens with a ministerial session on reforming the international financial architecture, followed by special dialogues with the Bretton Woods Institutions, and with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The remainder of the programme focuses on mobilising private capital, trade and follow-up to the Sevilla commitments.
The stakes are high. Sevilla produced a broad set of political agreements on global financing reform. But one year on, implementation remains limited and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) financing gap remains huge. At the same time, new economic shocks and persistent policy uncertainty are putting additional pressure on an already underfunded multilateral system.
