This briefing paper gives an overview of the current challenges in different development finance action areas. In the second part, we give an overview of the UN’s FfD process and of the international agreements on Financing for Development. Based on our analysis, we identify 10 key levers for financing sustainable development. With these, Eu­rope can make a substantial contribution to financ­ing for development and thereby to the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development worldwide.

Vom 25. Bis zum 29. Oktober 2021 tagte die zwischenstaatliche Arbeitsgruppe zur Formulierung eines verbindlichen Abkommens zu Wirtschaft und Menschenrechten zum siebten Mal im Menschenrechtsrat der Vereinten Nationen (UN) in Genf. Gleich zwei Entwicklungen sorgten für eine neue Dynamik gegenüber den vorherigen Tagungen: Erstmals seit Einrichtung der zwischenstaatlichen Arbeitsgruppe im Jahr 2014 nahmen die USA und Japan an der Tagung teil. Auch Deutschland äußerte sich seit dem siebenjährigen Bestehen der UN-Arbeitsgruppe zum ersten Mal.

Immer mehr Unternehmen sprechen sich öffentlich für ein ambitioniertes EU-Lieferkettengesetz zum Schutz von Menschenrechten, Umwelt und Klima in ihren Aktivitäten und Geschäftsbeziehungen aus. Wie unveröffentlichte Positionspapiere, Briefe und Emails an Entscheidungsträger*innen zeigen, setzen deutsche Wirtschaftsverbände hinter den Kulissen hingegen alles daran, eine solche Gesetzgebung zu verhindern oder weichzuspülen und damit auch das deutsche Lieferkettengesetz deutlich abzuschwächen.
